Throbbing pain from a tooth infection can be quite a nuisance. Unfortunately, it’s one of those things that won’t simply go away on its own. Unlike other types of illnesses, tooth infections must be treated by a dentist, or they can quickly spread to other teeth, or even throughout the rest of the body. In fact, though rare, if left untreated a tooth infection could kill you.

Protect your teeth and your health by knowing the signs of a tooth infection. It could save your life!

What is a Tooth Infection?

Tooth infection occurs in the center of the tooth, with living material known as pulp. It happens when the pulp becomes infiltrated with bacteria that enters the tooth through a cavity, crack, or break. This can often cause a great deal of pain; however, it can sometimes be completely painless.

How is a Tooth Infection Treated?

When your tooth becomes infected, your dentist will need to perform a procedure known as a root canal. During this treatment, your tooth will be opened, and the infected pulp will be removed. It will then be cleaned out with antiseptic, and then filled with a synthetic pulp that will restore the tooth and prevent further infection from occurring. Then, the tooth will be sealed back up with a filling or crown and will be usable again.

Root canals get a bad rap as being scary or painful, but the good news is that they are done under anesthesia and most patients report feeling much better after the procedure, not worse.

What Are the Signs of a Tooth Infection?

Because they don’t always hurt, it is important to know the warning signs of a tooth infection before it’s too late. If you notice any of the following symptoms, contact your dentist as soon as possible for an urgent appointment:

  • Throbbing pain in the tooth
  • Pain chewing or eating
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot or cold food or beverages
  • Unpleasant or bitter taste in the mouth
  • Bad breath even after brushing or rinsing with mouth wash
  • Insomnia or headache
  • Swollen cheeks or jaw
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen or red gums
  • Fever
  • Ear pain

Remember, urgent treatment of a tooth infection could be the difference between a root canal and a lost tooth, or much worse. Don’t rely on the pain to simply go away on its own. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, contact your dentist at once.
